In Arizona, 'adrenaline rush' propels fire crews

SC firefighters here for competition, including Horry County's first all woman team by WPDE NewsChannel 15

Dozens of firefighters from across South Carolina are on the Grand Strand for a firefighter challenge as part of the South Carolina Fire-Rescue Conference.

In a roped off section of Broadway at the Beach, firefighters spent the day going through a series of activities, including running up four flight of stairs with a 45 pound hose load in tow. These drills resemble real life scenarios. Agility, strength, and endurance are important for all firefighters on the course and on the job.

"Run and hit a kaiser, which is supposed to mimic forcible entry or chopping ventilation in a roof and that weighs 165 pounds," said Lt. Stephen Schuessler with Myrtle Beach Fire Department.

To prepare for this type of an event, training is key. The firefighters are doing physical activity in full gear that adds an extra 65 pounds.

"We go to the Sheraton and climb 15 fights 3 times. There's certain days we have a course behind the station you know flipping tires," added Schuessler. He continued, "Being able to maintain. You know, fires aren't out in 15 minutes so you gotta be able to pace yourself and go on time after time."

"We just run through different scenarios of different people and different positions see who's best at what. We also hit the gym. It's all about strength and endurance," said Christine Berry with Horry County Fire Rescue.

She's part of Horry County Fire Rescue's first ever all female team. Group members have various backgrounds in physical fitness. They're focused on being accurate, strong, and quick.

"Trying to get our there and just show that we can do it too. Might take us a few minutes longer, but we can get it done." Berry goes on to say they are just as competitive as the men and love their jobs as firefighters.

106th SC Firefighter Convention begins with 9/11 tribute by WPDE NewsChannel 15

Fire service leaders from New York City shared first-hand accounts of the September 11 attacks during opening ceremonies for the 106th South Carolina Firefighters Convention.

Hundreds of firefighters from departments all over South Carolina filled the Myrtle Beach Convention Center's Grand Ballroom Thursday. They listened to a New York City fire chief stress the importance of proper training and equipment in the field.

"You've got to do the training and you've got to hear the message from other people because if you're not here, hearing the message, then you cant pass it on to others," Spartanburg firefighter Charlie Shill said.
The Charleston Southern University Players will deliver a message of leadership when they perform 'The Guy's', a play by Anne Nelson. It tells the story of a New York City fire captain, post-9/11, who turns to an editor for help in eulogizing the eight firefighters he lost.

"You think about all the funerals they had to go to, but you didn't think about how many funerals they had to go to in a day. We saw everything on TV but you don't think about what they went through," Shill added.
For the past ten decades, firefighters from all over the Palmetto State like Shill, have looked to the South Carolina Firefighter's Convention for brotherhood and training, as well as the latest in firefighting equipment. "Equipment is a big deal," Shill said. The Convention Center's Exhibit halls are filled with ambulances, engines, and the newest fire service equipment and apparatus offered by 140 vendors from around the southeast.

The Firefighter Combat Challenge and the South Carolina Firefighter Explorer Challenge will be held this weekend at Broadway at the Beach.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center in honor of South Carolina's 2011 Fallen Firefighters.
