August 9, 2011 Meeting Minutes


August 9, 2011

Chief Milton Widener called the meeting to Order.  An attendance roster was passed around for signature.  A quorum was present.

The Department discussed briefly the trailer fire the previous Friday.

Department members were urged to bring bunker gear to alarms.

Chief Widener discussed the purchase of two TV’s and a laptop with 1% funds and proceeding to get estimates.  Later in the meeting the purchase of a flag pole with these funds was discussed.  The Department voted in favor of the purchases and signed the documentation.

There will be a CPR / First Aid course at the August 23, 2011 meeting.

Chief Widener asked assistance with cooking hamburgers Thursday August 11th for the Booster Club.

Bylaws will be presented at the next meeting.

The Department members present were polled as to who needed map books.

Chief Widener and the Department discussed the use of Mutual Aid within the City Limits.  Mutual Aid for calls in the County should be the 3 department close to the alarm.

Repair and use of the cascade system was discussed along with when the hydro test is needed for the cylinders.

The Department discussed repairs to the flooring and announced a work day on September 10th.

The haunted trail was discussed briefly but tabled until Chris Hudson can be contacted.

A retirement dinner will be held in the hall on Saturday.

A reminder was made if equipment is taken off a truck to return it.

July 26, 2011 Meeting Minutes


July 26, 2011

Chief Milton Widener called the meeting to Order.  An attendance roster was passed around for signature.  A quorum was present; subs were served for dinner.

Chief presented the following report:
·       -   Asked Department members to cleanup following use of the building.
·         - 706 lights have been fixed; a burnt solenoid was the problem.
·         - Bylaw meeting met Sunday to go over proposed changes and will present at the next meeting.
·         - Calendars: a few have not been delivered; anticipate next year conducting  distribution differently.
·         - Deputy Chief Roger Kaney and Chief Widener attend the SCE&G dinner.
·         - Chief Widener discussed 1% funds and possible ideas: current TV’s do not operate – Department suggested two 46 inch TV’s; a new laptop as the current computer does not work; new t-shirts for the Department; also discussed polo shirts and jackets.
·          
A  CPR class will be held at Barnwell Rural on August 13 starting at 0900 cost is $30 per person; members interested should inform Chief Widener.

A Firefighter I course will be offered in September; need CPR for the course.

Critiqued the Oak Grove fire: 13 firefighters responded; not enough hose in the cross lay with 150 foot added; fire could have been bad; insurance investigator called it a good stop.

Duracell in a national campaigned donated batteries to the Department.

A number of applicants were submitted to the Department.

Chief Milton Widener called the meeting to Order.  An attendance roster was passed around for signature.  A quorum was present. 

Chief Widener turned over calendar  and pool filling funds to the Treasurer for deposit.

The Chief discussed the following:
·         - announced the SCE&G seminar coming up on July 21 at 6:30 PM in North Augusta; discuss pipeline response.
·         - The air compressor has been recertified with Grade E air.
·         - 702 will be taken to Augusta for work on the air conditioner.
·         - Last months reports are complete.
·         - Several badges that were borrowed for dress uniforms have not as yet been returned.
·         - Grants will be open soon; plans are to submit at least two applications for bunker gear.
·         - Two sets of bunker gear have been ordered.
·         - 702’s mirror has been replaced.

Discussed the donation of four trailers to be used as a smoke house; Department members spoke in favor of the donation.

A critique was held of the Allendale Avenue fire; truck placement was good; a good stop; problems with the hydrant cap; and good response.

The Department enjoyed churned ice cream made by Chief Widener.

The meeting was adjourned.

Pelion Fire - SCFire

PELION - Lexington County Firefighters were called to Stop-N-Shop Thrift Store at 7468 Edmund Highway and find the building heavily involved with fire. The fire was brought under control in about 1/2 hour. There were two employees inside the building that escaped unharmed. The fire, that is still under investigation, caused about $200,000 in damage. J

Williston Fire Chief Milton Widener Public Comment During DNFSB

Williston Fire Chief Milton Widener provided a statement during public comment portion of the Defense Nuclear Facility Safety Board today in Augusta, GA at the Bell Auditorium.  The DNFSB was holding a public hearing on emergency preparedness and other topics at the Savannah River Site (SRS).  Chief Widener was one of several other citizens who provided comments.  Chief Widener allowed the DNFSB members to view a picture of the 1995 downtown fire that destroyed a portion of a block of buildings.  Chief Widener stated that the fire department “trained for the worst and hoped for the best” and appreciated the assistance provided by SRS.  Chief Widener ended by stating if the opportunity ever presented itself the Town of Williston would provide assistance to SRS.
